Ascension Providence Hospital Advanced Internal Medicine: Outpatient

Rotation Location: Outpatient Offices
Duration of the Rotation: 2 or 4 weeks
Students Per Month: 1 per faculty contact
Work Hours: Generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but will vary per office and day of the week.
Prerequisites: 2 years of medical school and 3rd year internal medicine clerkship completion

General: The student will refine diagnostic and intervention skills in general internal medicine, supervised in an outpatient setting, by assuming increased management responsibilities (compared to those assumed in the required clerkship) for a small number of patients.
Goals & Objectives of Rotation: The student will demonstrate:
- Comprehensive work‐up of new patients.
- Effective problem solving, planning and follow up.
- Good doctor/patient relationships and concern for patient interests.
- Appropriate use of consultants and allied health personnel.
- Willingness to give and receive constructive criticism. Use of appropriate medical literature is expected.
Professional Competence: The student should demonstrate development of professional competency, which is based on integration of theory and practice, application of skills, use of clinical thinking, exercise of ethical judgment, use of appropriate communication, recognition of teaching responsibilities, development of management responsibilities, and teaching and learning for a lifetime.
Evaluation: Preceptor(s) will submit a written evaluation at the conclusion of the clerkship. Faculty are encouraged to provide ongoing feedback throughout the rotation.
