Prerequisites: 2 years of medical school; MCE completion for MSUCHM students; internal medicine core clerkship completion for students from other schools

General:  The elective rotation in cardiology at Providence-Providence Park Hospital introduces students to all aspects of cardiovascular medicine.  A large patient population demonstrating all aspects of valvular, ischemic, hypertensive and congenital heart disease is utilized to instruct the student in the skills of clinical assessment and physical diagnosis.  A busy cardiac catheterization laboratory provides the opportunity to observe left and right heart catheterization, angiography and coronary and vascular interventions.

Goals & Objectives: Students will spend a balanced amount of time between seeing patients on consultations with the staff cardiologists and seeing patients in the cardiology fellows’ clinic. They will have the opportunity to participate in the full spectrum of noninvasive cardiology testing, including ECG interpretation, echocardiography, electrophysiology lab and stress testing. Students also attend weekly cardiology lectures, possibly including ECG interpretation lectures for students, fellow-led lectures for all rotating residents and students, echocardiography conferences, catheterization conferences and cardiology grand rounds.

Evaluation:

At the end of the rotation, the Rotation Director will collect data from the supervising physician and other medical team members and complete a written evaluation of the student that is reflective of the student’s academic competence, procedural proficiency and professional attributes. The standard medical school form from the student’s medical school will be used. If required, the student should complete a case log and an evaluation of the rotation and submit them to their medical school.
