General: Demonstrates to the student the approach to the gynecologic oncology patient in a community hospital.
Goals & Objectives: The student elective rotation at Providence-Providence Park Hospital in Gynecologic Oncology has the following objectives:
- Describe the symptoms and physical examination findings of patients with vulvar, cervical, uterine and ovarian neoplasms.
- List the risk factors associated with vulvar, cervical, uterine and ovarian neoplasms.
- List the current ASCCP guidelines for cervical cancer screening tests and subsequent management of abnormal cytology and histology.
- Describe management/treatment options of vulvar, cervical, uterine and ovarian neoplasms.
Student Responsibilities and Expectations:
- Be familiar with terminology concerning oncology patients (definition of terms and their proper usage).
- Be able to obtain a basic history and physical examination on an oncology patient.
- Be able to present cases to the resident/attending.
- Attend the following conferences:
- Morning Report - 7:00 a.m. daily
- Grand Rounds – Wednesday at 8:00 a.m.
- Didactic conferences – Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
- Participate in daily rounds on oncology patients with the resident assigned to the service.
- Participate in the surgical management of gynecologic oncology cases.
- Participate in consultations requested of the gynecological oncologist attending.
- Present a gynecologic oncology lecture at didactics (e.g., tumor board) as assigned by the chief resident/attending.
- Rotation schedule is generally Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., but is at the discretion of the Rotation Director.
- Night call is not required but available on a limited basis, if desired.
The above is accomplished by direct observation/patient care, supplemented by the limited use of didactic lectures and self-directed reading, reviewing primarily what was taught in the first two years of medical school.Evaluation: At the end of the rotation, the Rotation Director will collect data from the supervising physician and other medical team members and complete a written evaluation of the student that is reflective of the student’s academic competence, procedural proficiency and professional attributes. The standard medical school form from the student’s medical school will be used. If required, the student should complete a case log and an evaluation of the rotation and submit them to their medical school.
