Prerequisites: 2 years of medical school; MCE completion for MSU CHM students; 3rd year completion of Internal Medicine clerkship

General: This elective is designed to expose the student to management of acute and chronic respiratory disease in the office and hospital settings, including the ICU.  It includes exposure to fiberoptic bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, pulmonary function testing, ABGs and diagnostic imaging of the lungs and chest (x-ray and CT).  It also includes an introduction to the management and treatment of sleep disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Goals & Objectives: Several objectives have been set for the pulmonary rotation:

  • Reinforce the fundamental role of gas exchange, acid-base and aspects of the basic sciences related to pulmonary medicine.
  • Gain experience with both common and unusual pulmonary diseases in the ambulatory and inpatient settings.  These include pneumonia, asthma, COPD, lung nodules, cough and dyspnea, sarcoidosis of the lungs and pulmonary fibrosis.
  • Become acquainted with respiratory therapy treatment, including oxygen administration, outpatient pulmonary rehab and principles of ventilator management.
  • Gain an understanding of pulmonary function laboratory procedures by direct observation and participation in an outpatient PFT laboratory.
  • Observe clinical procedures, such as bronchoscopy and thoracentesis, as part of the clinical management of pulmonary disease.

Evaluation: At the end of the rotation, the Rotation Director will collect data from the supervising physician and other medical team members and complete a written evaluation of the student that is reflective of the student’s academic competence, procedural proficiency and professional attributes. The standard medical school form from the student’s medical school will be used. If required, the student should complete a case log and an evaluation of the rotation and submit them to their medical school.
