Prerequisites: 2 years of medical school; MCE completion for MSUCHM Students; internal medicine core clerkship completion for students from other schools

General: The elective rotation in endocrinology will be a combined inpatient and outpatient educational experience. In the inpatient setting, medical students will be involved doing endocrinology consultations, as well as making daily rounds in the hospital. In the outpatient setting, the students will be present during all scheduled office hours. They will be exposed to a variety of diseases, including disorders of the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands, abnormalities of bone and mineral metabolism, gonadal dysfunction, obesity, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes mellitus. The students will be seeing patients both independently and in conjunction with the physician, as the circumstances dictate. The student will have exposure to interpretation of endocrine laboratory studies, as well as bone densitometry evaluations.
Goals & Objectives: By the end of the rotation, the student will:
- Assess diabetic patients for acute and chronic complications.
- Establish a viable treatment program for patients with diabetes.
- Assess patients with thyroid dysfunction and be familiar with the various etiologies of hypo and hyperthyroidism and their treatments.
- Understand the various treatment options available to endocrine patients from both a pharmacological and non-pharmacological perspective.
- Observe and participate in the care of other endocrinopathies, including those of the pituitary, adrenals, gonads, parathyroid glands, etc.
At the end of the rotation, the Rotation Director will collect data from the supervising physician and other medical team members and complete a written evaluation of the student that is reflective of the student’s academic competence, procedural proficiency and professional attributes. The standard medical school form from the student’s medical school will be used. If required, the student should complete a case log and an evaluation of the rotation and submit them to their medical school.
