RESIDENT HOUSE STAFF BENEFITS
  • MEDICAL COVERAGE
    Effective from date of hire, medical, dental and vision insurance is available. The resident has 30 days to elect the plan(s) of their choice. Elections can also be made around October each year or in the event of a significant life change (birth, marriage, etc.). 
  • ASSOCIATE LIFE INSURANCE
    Effective from date of hire, core coverage equal to 1 x base pay paid by Providence. Options include base pay with a partial credit back or options to buy up to 2x, 3x or 4x annual base pay
  • FAMILY LIFE INSURANCE
    Effective from date of hire, if elective, coverage for spouse and child(ren) is available.
  • GROUP LEGAL PLAN
    Effective the first of the month following three (3) months employment. Legal services are available through group plan for associates and dependents. Coverage is 100% contributory.
  • BUSINESS TRAVEL/ACCIDENT INSURANCE
    Eligible date of hire. Coverage up to $300,000 for loss of life or dismemberment while traveling on Providence business.
  • PAID SICK TIME
    Sick days are provided on an as-needed basis. The resident must notify their home program, and if different, their current service of their absence that day.
  • SHORT TERM DISABILITY
    Benefit based on 60% of your salary and coordinates with paid sick hours to provide income protection during the 180 day waiting period for Long Term Disability benefits.
  • PROVIDENCE LONG TERM DISABILITY POLICY
    Effective the first of the month following 6 months. Eligible for 60% of your salary to a maximum of $2,500/mo. No offsets for Social Security, Worker's Compensation or Pension. Supplemental/optional coverage is available. Plan is portable upon termination of employment.
  • RESIDENT MEAL COVERAGE
    $1,200 meal card (disbursed quarterly) is provided to every resident at the start of each academic year (July 1st) for while on service at Ascension Providence Hospital Novi and Ascension Providence Hospital Southfield. Ascension St. John Hospital offers complimentary meal coverage for neurosurgery house staff.
  • EDUCATIONAL STIPEND AND CONFERENCE REIMBURSEMENTS
    Educational stipends are provided for all residents and increase each year depending on the year of residency and specific needs of the program. This stipend can be used for items such as books, computers (taxed), and additional educational related costs. All reimbursements must be approved by both the Neurosurgery Residency Program Coordinator and Coordinator of Graduate Medical Education. Stipends for PGY-1 begin at $1,000 for the academic year (as of 2014). Step III board exams for PGY-1 can be approved as an educational expense and used with stipend funds. Conference travel and attendance can be reimbursed by Graduate Medical Education if the individual is presenting at the conference. Specific details regarding this process should be addressed with the Neurosurgery Residency Program Coordinator.
  • BOARD EXAM
    For all PGY-1/2 residents, USMLE Step III/ COMLEX Part 3 exams are eligible for reimbursement from the resident's education stipend as mentioned above.
  • SURGICAL LOUPES
    The neurosurgical program (at no additional cost to the resident) provides one pair of surgical loupes. Prescription lenses are available. Residents are fitted at the end of PGY-1 with delivery at or near July 1st of the PGY-2.
  • PERSONAL DAYS
    Eligible from date of hire. 3 days (24 hrs) from sick bank may be used for personal absence yearly.
  • VACATION
    Three (3) weeks of paid vacation per contract year. All vacation time must be scheduled with the Program Director and the chief resident.
  • LEAVES OF ABSENCE
    An authorized leave of more than 3 working days. The written request must be submitted to the Program Director for approval and to Medical Education for signature and appropriate processing.
  • COMPENSATION STIPEND
    For the 2018-19 academic year, PGY-1 residents are paid $50,459; and PGY-2 are paid $52,949.
