Saroj Misra, DO, FACOFP - Program Director

Dr. Saroj Misra is a board certified Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment physician. He has been in practice since 2001 and has served as academic faculty since that time. He specializes in women's health, hypertension, dyslipidemia, depression/anxiety, and osteopathic manipulative treatment for disease processes and chronic pain. Dr. Misra seeks to ensure that each patient is cared for in a manner that considers all elements related to the body, mind, and spirit for promotion of wellness or treatment of disease. Academically, Dr. Misra promotes an educational culture of ‘learning without fear’ and strives to ensure all learners are both heard and listened to. Dr. Misra graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed a residency at St. John Oakland Hospital and a Primary Care Teaching Fellowship at Michigan State University-College of Human Medicine. Dr. Misra holds academic appointments with Michigan State University, Des Moines University, Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, and A.T. Still University.

In 2018, Dr. Misra was named the Family Physician of the Year by the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. Dr. Misra oversees the residency training program for Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital and has been recognized multiple times for his teaching and training skills. Dr. Misra is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (where he is a Governor on the board), the Michigan Osteopathic Association, and the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians (which he served as President for in 2015).

Rachel Nixon, DO, Associate Program Director

Dr. Rachel Nixon is a board certified family medicine physician. She completed her medical degree at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and residency at Ascension Macomb Oakland Hospital. She is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, and the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians. Dr. Nixon holds academic appointments as the Associate Program Director for Ascension Macomb-Oakland Family Medicine Residency program, DMU Student Didactics Instructor, and MSUCOM Student Didactics Instructor. Dr. Nixon provides all patients with compassion and dedication, treating them as an extension of her family. She believes in a holistic approach when treating patients and treats all aspects of the patient with each encounter.

Jason Soffa, DO

Dr. Jason Soffa is a board certified family medicine physician. He completed his medical degree at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and residency at St. John Oakland Hospital. He is a member of the American Osteopathic Association. Dr. Soffa holds an academic appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor at Michigan State University. Dr. Soffa focuses on prevention of disease and empowering patients to optimize their health. He has a special interest in nutrition, along with prevention and treatment of diabetes.

Jennifer Burlingame, DO

Dr. Jennifer Burningame completed her medical degree at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and residency at St. John Macomb Oakland Hospital. She additionally has a masters in Bioethics and Humanity from Michigan State University. She is board certified in Family Medicine and OMT through the ACOFP. Dr. Burlingame holds an academic appointment with Michigan State University COM as a Clinical Assistant Professor. Her passion for medicine stems from an interest in working with women and children as well as preventative health maintenance. She has come to love her position in academic medicine and enjoys serving as a mentor to learners in the Ascension Family Medicine program. She is a mother to 3 young children and in her free time enjoys many activities outside of medicine including (but not limited to!) cooking, water and snow skiing, gardening, yoga, and anything that connects her to her family and staying happy and healthy.

Dr. Jennifer Hanna is a board-certified family medicine physician. She completed her medical degree at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and residency at Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital, where she also served as a Chief Resident. Dr. Hanna is board-certified in family medicine through the American Board of Family Physicians (ABFM). She holds an academic appointment with Michigan State University COM as a Clinical Assistant Professor and also serves as a Director on the MAOFP Board of Directors. She has special interest in both women's and preventative health. Dr. Hanna is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, and Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians.

Ryan Smith, DO

Dr. Ryan Smith is a board-certified family medicine physician. He completed his medical degree at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and residency at Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital, where he also served as a Chief Resident. Dr. Smith is board-certified in family medicine and OMT through the American Board of Family Physicians (ABFM) and American Board of Osteopathic Family Physicians (AOBFP). Dr. Smith seeks to educate the next generation of family physicians by promoting health & wellness encompassing a holistic approach to each patient. He focuses on disease management and aspects of the mind, body, and spirit that integrate into optimizing a patient’s health. It is Dr. Smith’s mission to allow each learner a suitable environment to learn, grow, and thrive. Dr. Smith holds a special interest in preventative medicine and population health. He holds an academic appointment with Michigan State University COM as a Clinical Assistant Professor and also serves as a Director on the MAOFP Board of Directors. Dr. Smith has received the AOF/ACOFP Outstanding Resident of the Year Award, MAOFP Resident of the Year Award, and the STFM Resident Teacher Award.

Helene Greenwald, PhD

Dr. Greenwald is the program’s consulting psychologist. She specializes in childhood disorders, school related problems, depression, anxiety, and ADHD. She works clinically with children, adolescents and adults. Dr. Greenwald attended undergrad at the University of Michigan and received her masters and doctorate degrees from Wayne State University in 2004.
