Introduction

The purpose of the Ascension Providence Hospital Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellowship program is to produce outstanding physicians trained in pulmonary and critical care medicine who are fully prepared to pursue careers in either academic medicine or private practice. At the end of the three-year training period, fellows in our division are eligible for dual certification in pulmonary and critical care medicine.

Fellows in our program benefit from the innovative treatments and technology we use in our division. They work alongside some of the most outstanding pulmonologists and intensivists in the region. They are able to participate in division research that is actively advancing the understanding and treatment of pulmonary disease.

Our fellowship program is a three-year program. The American Board of Internal Medicine requires a total of 18 months of clinical training for board certification in both of these disciplines. The diversity of experiences gained from rotating through the two campuses is one of the most unique aspects of the training program. There is exposure gained in treating pulmonary arterial hypertension, lung cancer, asthma, COPD, occupational disorders, sleep disorders and much more. The ICU experience includes management of ARDS, sepsis, post cardiac surgery and patients requiring neuro-surgical care, and many other aspects of critical care medicine. The procedural experience gained at Ascension Providence Hospital is par-excellence. The fellows will gain expertise in performing EBUS, navigation bronchoscopy and bronchothermoplasty.

Ascension Providence Hospital is a community hospital with two campuses located in Southfield (395 beds) and Novi (259 beds). The hospital provides tertiary care in Oakland County and to the population of the Detroit Metropolitan Area. The new Pulmonary/Critical Care program was accredited in 2013. Ascension Providence Hospital is the center for a very active EMS program for the cities of Southfield, Oak Park and Novi and therefore accepts a large number of emergencies. The institution has a 12-bed medical/surgical ICU, 15-bed cardiovascular ICU and 10-bed neuro ICU at the Southfield campus, and a 12-bed medical/surgical ICU and 8-bed neuro ICU at the Novi campus.

The Pulmonary consult service is a busy, procedure-rich rotation. The fellows have one half-day office for continuity of care.

The didactic lectures include core lecture series during the first two months for the incoming fellows and then twice weekly lectures that includes lectures from faculty (regional and national) and presentations driven by fellows including case presentations, M&M, journal clubs, research meetings and much more. Our faculty is deeply involved in participating in these didactics.
