General:  This is a small town/rural outpatient family medicine rotation in a store-front office with 21,000 annual patient visits.  It provides an excellent experience for students considering future practice in a small town or rural area.

Recommended Reading:
Textbook of Family Medicine, Ninth Edition, Robert E. Rakel, M.D., David Rake, MD
Recommended readings in family medicine journals

Goals & Objectives: Students are exposed to patients with a wide range of issues, including prenatal care, well child visits, adult physicals and chronic disease management.  There is a community medicine focus with care provided to patients with common barriers to health care.  Students are paired with family medicine faculty and senior residents. Students evaluate patients independently, give oral presentations and actively participate in patient management and education.  Students also participate in procedure clinics, nursing home visits and an extensive resident conference schedule. Exposure to the Family Medicine Inpatient Service and Family Centered Birthing can be arranged.

Evaluation: At the end of the rotation, the Rotation Director will collect data from the supervising physician and other medical team members and complete a written evaluation of the student that is reflective of the student’s academic competence, procedural proficiency and professional attributes. The standard medical school form from the student’s medical school will be used. If required, the student should complete a case log and an evaluation of the rotation and submit them to their medical school.
