Prerequisites: 2 years of medical school; MCE completion for MSUCHM Students; completion of Internal Medicine core clerkship for students from other schools

General: The Infectious Disease rotation at Ascension Providence Hospital is a consultative service under the direction of a full-time board-certified faculty member. Educational objectives can be achieved by:
- Following and performing the infectious disease consultations on a small number of patients and presenting the history, physical findings, and impressions to the attending, as well as, participating in office consultations and follow-ups with attendings;
- Participating in formal infectious disease teaching rounds and daily rounds with the attending;
- Reviewing laboratory and radiology studies pertaining to infectious disease patients, such as clinical microbiology, serum chemistries, immunological studies and radiologic studies;
- Observing and participating in invasive and diagnostic procedures associated with infectious disease patients;
- Taking part in basic research on a selected clinical study;
- Attending the Infectious Disease Conference on the second Monday of each month, which consists of the presentation of an interesting case and
- Attending the monthly journal club which meets the third Monday of the month.

Goals & Objectives:
- To become familiar with clinical evaluation of patients with infections relative to diagnosis, cost-effective antibiotic therapy, applied medical microbiology, basic immunology and pharmacokinetics of antimicrobial agents.
- To become acquainted with laboratory studies pertaining to the infectious disease patient, i.e. clinical microbiology, serum chemistries, immunological studies and radiologic studies.
- To participate in clinical, laboratory and outcome research.
- To observe and participate in invasive and diagnostic procedures associated with infectious disease patients.
- To encourage journal and textbook reading.
Evaluation: The Rotation Director will collect data from the supervising physician and other medical team members and complete a written evaluation of the student that is reflective of the student’s academic competence, procedural proficiency and professional attributes. The standard medical school form from the student’s medical school will be used. If required, the student should complete a case log and an evaluation of the rotation and submit them to their medical school.
