Ascension St. John Hospital Family Medicine Faculty
Mark Paschall, M.D.
Dr. Paschall is the Program Director and has been on the faculty at Ascension St. John since 1999. He attended University of Michigan for his undergraduate studies and medical school, and completed his residency training at Washington Hospital in Washington, Pennsylvania. Dr. Paschall spent four years in France and then Ivory Coast, West Africa, working at a remote mission hospital. He has a special interest in travel, tropical, and international medicine and has remained active in several international mission organizations.
Rachel O’Byrne, M.D.C.M., FAAFP
Chair of Medicine
Dr. O’Byrne completed her undergraduate education at the University of Michigan before attending medical school at McGill University in Montreal. She completed her residency in Milwaukee at University of Wisconsin St. Luke’s Family Medicine Residency. She moved back to this area in 2005 and joined the Ascension St. John faculty. Dr. O’Byrne’s interests include preventative health, holistic care and women’s health. She has had the opportunity to be a lead investigator on a national study on postpartum depression and has also completed a faculty development program with the University of Michigan. Dr. O’Byrne practices primarily at the Masonic Medical Center site.
Barry Scofield, M.D.
Associate Program Director
Dr. Scofield has been a faculty member since 1998 and graduated from this program. He previously had completed an OB/GYN Residency in Rio De Janero, Brazil, where he practiced for 12 years. During that period he also practiced in an emergency room once a week. Dr Scofield currently has a full balanced family practice. He is also very interested in office procedures for which he provides hands-on experience to students and residents at the Masonic site.
Jenese Reynolds-Gibbs, M.D., FAAFP
Associate Program Director
Dr. Reynolds is a graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine and she completed her residency at UIC/Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, IL. After serving as chief resident, she worked as a faculty member in Flint, MI before joining the Ascension St. John Family Medicine Residency faculty in 2012. She is passionate about practicing OB and has a special interest in women’s health, pediatrics and adolescent medicine. Dr. Reynolds is also committed to resident and medical student education.
Anna Farhat, M.D.
Dr. Farhat graduated from St George's Medical school and subsequently from the Ascension St John's Hospital and Medical Center residency program in 2015. She went on to work in a private practice in Metro Detroit for 2 years. She has special interests in pediatrics, women's health, and office procedures. She has been awarded “Mom-approved doc” by Metroparent 2 years in a row.
Kwame Francis, M.D.
Dr. Francis grew up in the Caribbean island of Antigua, received his medical education at Wayne State University in Detroit and subsequently did his residency training at Ascension Providence Hospital. He has a passion for healing surpassed only by his passion for prevention. Dr. Francis takes a holistic, spiritually centered approach to medicine caring for patients within the context of their families and social settings. Patient care is tailor made to each patient’s specific need; as such much care is taken to listen to patient’s concerns. He believes in empowering individuals and spends time educating patients, students and residents. His passion for teaching lends itself well to his roles as coordinator for the simulation curriculum and spreading the healing-without-harm initiative throughout Ascension Southeast Michigan.
Sarah Hagle, M.D.
Dr. Hagle graduated from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (GO GREEN!) with a combined MD and MPH in 2014. She started in an OB/GYN residency at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI, but after two years, realized that it was not what she was looking for in a career. She transitions into the Family Medicine residency program at the same hospital, and fell in love with medicine all over again. She continued to work with women and provide obstetric care, but was also able it incorporate her other passion, preventative medicine! She enjoys the continuity of family medicine and working with entire families through all stages of life. She completed her residency in November 2018 and found her dream job here at Ascension St. John Family Medicine Residency Program where she gets to share her enthusiasm for family medicine while teaching medical students and resident physicians.
Chandrika Iyer, M.D.
Dr. Iyer graduated from Calcutta Medical College, India. She did her residency in OB/GYN in India and then in Family Medicine at Ascension St. John Hospital. She joined the program in 2000 and currently is the Medical Director at the Masonic Medical Center. Her special interests are women’s health issues, HHT, office procedures and urgent care. Dr. Iyer completed a faculty development program at the University of Michigan. She is currently PEPID Women’s Health Chief Editor.
Veena Panthangi, M.D.
Dr. Panthangi completed her Geriatric Medicine fellowship at University of Michigan and her family medicine residency at Ascension St. Johns Hospital. Dr. Panthangi practices outpatient and inpatient Family Medicine and Geriatrics. She is Board certified in Geriatric and Family Medicine. She has been serving as a clinical instructor with the group since 2007.
Jeanette Wilson, M.D.
Dr. Wilson graduated from St. George's University School of Medicine and completed her residency at Ascension St. John Hospital Family Medicine program in 2018. She joined the faculty at our program for residency. Dr. Wilson practices both inpatient and outpatient Family medicine, and her practice interests include pediatrics, adult medicine, women's health, and urgent care. She has a passion for educating residents and medical students and participates in teaching hands-on workshops through Michigan Academy of Family Physicians and Wayne State University SOM
Jessica C. Hauser, PhD
Director of Behavioral Science and Research
Dr. Hauser coordinates the behavioral science and research components of the curriculum as well as overseeing the month-long intern orientation program. A native Michigander, she attended Albion College for her undergraduate degree in psychology. She earned her graduate degrees in Clinical and Developmental Psychology. She completed her pre-doctoral internship training at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, followed by a two-year post-doctoral position in the Department of Psychiatry at The Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University. Prior to joining the residency, Dr. Hauser worked as an outpatient clinical child psychologist and a college professor. She is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. Dr. Hauser is fully licensed to practice psychology in the state of Michigan.
