Pharmacy Practice Residency Program
Thank you for your interest in the Ascension St. John Hospital Pharmacy Post-Graduate Year One (PGY1) Residency Program. We will begin recruiting in the fall for our four positions.
Ascension’s Pharmacy Practice Residency is an organized, directed, post-graduate program developing adept pharmacists with advanced knowledge in the application of pharmaceutical care and the skills to be leaders in improving patient safety.
Our pharmacy residency program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
Statement of Purpose
Ascension St. John Hospital Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency Purpose Statement
PGY1 Pharmacy Residency programs build on pharmacy education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for Post-Graduate Year Two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Intended Outcomes of the Residency Training
The Intended Outcome of the Ascension St. John Hospital Post-Graduate Year One pharmacy residency training is a well-rounded individual who will:
- Foster the appropriate and effective use of medications
- Educate patients, caregivers, and health care professionals
- Exercise leadership in improving the safety of the medication-use system
Annual salary: Approximately $54,000

Staffing & Service Commitment
Residents will practice as Patient Care Pharmacists every other weekend for about six months, then as skill level permits, will be transitioned to an every third weekend staffing schedule. Residents will also serve as Patient Care Pharmacists on three holidays to strengthen their skills in distributive and clinical services including: Order Entry, Pharmacokinetic Dosing, Pain Management, and Anticoagulation Services.
