Dr. David Siegel, is a Board Certified General Surgeon and Chief of Surgery at Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital has served as General Surgery, Program Director for fifteen years. Dr. Siegel specializes in all areas of general surgery and is considered the leader in hernia surgery with special interest in breast and colon cancer surgery, endoscopy, and minimally invasive surgery.
About Our General Surgery Program
We are a community-based program with all the benefits of a large health system with access to the latest technology and innovations in surgery. This is a 5-year program that provides residents with a broad experience in surgery and a good balance of clinical training and structured education.
Our main goal is to prepare the resident for a career in a general surgical practice or post-residency fellowship training. Many recent graduates have directly entered a general surgical practice while others have matched prestigious fellowships in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Critical Care Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Minimally Invasive and Laparoscopic Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Breast Surgery, and Reconstructive Breast Surgery. Progression from PGY-I to PGY-V level involves a graded increase in responsibility commensurate with the resident's skills and abilities. Operative experience begins on day one as a surgical intern. Recent chief surgical residents have graduated with around 1100-1200 major cases.
A unique aspect of our program is the emphasis and experience with advanced laparoscopic cases. We have a very active Bariatric Surgery service (25-35 cases/month) with no fellow. Surgical residents cover all of these cases, including revisional laparoscopic bariatric surgery, laparoscopic Roux-en-Y, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and laparoscopic gastric banding procedures.
Our education schedule includes weekly M&M conference, tumor board, monthly journal club, and program didactics that occur twice a week following the SCORE curriculum. The junior residents attend educational lectures and M&M conference at Ascension St. John Hospital. Alongside the programs own didactic schedule, all general surgical residency programs in Michigan participate in a monthly educational conference with guest speakers on major surgical topics. The program has required monthly simulation training during intern year and certifies in Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery . Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery training is done with the assistance of Associate Program Director, Dr. Puraj Patel and residents are expected to certified during their third year. All Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital surgery residents have the option to take the osteopathic in-service exam; however, the allopathic ABSITE is mandatory both are coverage by the program.
