Ascension Providence Hospital Summer Program in Biomedical Research

Overview

The Summer Program in Biomedical Research offered at Ascension Providence Hospital, Department of Medical Education, offers graduated senior high school students and college undergraduates the opportunity to learn research methods and to explore career opportunities in medicine. A total of twenty candidates will be selected for the program, which runs during the month of July each year.

Students will listen to a variety of lectures on various aspects of medicine, basic science and research methodology. They will interact with physicians and other healthcare associates from a variety of medical disciplines and learn about the everyday aspects of their specialty.  Students will also conduct literature searches and give a formal presentation on a relevant aspect of medicine or a disease.  The laboratory component of the class may consist of learning the basic elements of physical diagnosis and conducting a patient history, human cadaveric dissection, performing an EKG and learning how to suture skin lacerations.  Lastly, students will practice a variety of techniques in our medical Simulation Center.

Students will not be working directly with patients. However, if selected for the program, students will be required to provide evidence of a negative TB test and vaccination for COVID-19 and Hepatitis B. Otherwise, a TB skin test and COVID-19 and Hepatitis B vaccinations are available free of charge through the hospital. Depending on the current requirements of the hospital due to the COVID-19 pandemic, masks may also need to be worn. Because students may be required to work with potential biological and chemical hazards, they are required to undergo safety training and abide by all safety rules and guidelines. Students will be required to attend full time during the course of the program and to abide by corporate guidelines for conduct, attendance and dress.

Please note:  This program could be potentially cancelled depending upon the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic.   In the event that this happens, every effort will be made to notify students as early as possible.

The application will be available to fill out by February 1st.
